Senior Chemists
FIU Global Forensic & Justice Center
This past February, twelve Senior Chemist Committee (SCC) members took a tour of the FIU Global Forensic and Justice Center in Largo, FL. This space is designed to train technicians from all over and prepare them for crime scenes and provide hands on experience for future careers in forensics; each section had different realistic scenarios from a house setting to a burned automobile. Our senior chemists saw the advancements, latest techniques, and instrumentation used for forensic science first hand and had an amazing time touring this facility. Russell Odland, SCC Chair, notes how interesting the advancements made with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and swab samples requiring less preparation by simply entering them in a machine to quickly analyze. After the tour, our senior chemists headed over to Tresivo Pizza and Grill for a tasty lunch and had a blast discussing the tour. For more information on joining SCC, please contact Russell Odland: [email protected]

Stump a Chemist
Our Senior Chemists are up to it again!
They challenged the public to stump them with their toughest chemistry questions. Using money awarded to them with a Senior Chemists Mini-Grant that was awarded by the national ACS, our chemists set up a table outside of Panera Bread and had a good cup a coffee, good conversations, and a few laughs.
Thanks again to our Senior Chemists Group for keeping our Section fun!
