National Chemistry Week
This year, the ACS will celebrate National Chemistry Week, October 21-27, 2018, with the theme "Chemistry is Out of this World". As the NCW Coordinator of the Tampa Bay ACS Section, I am wondering if you are interested in hosting an event to celebrate with us. We will be ordering some NCW merchandise and the latest issue of Celebrating Chemistry. While supplies last; I would pass these materials on to you to support any event that you and your organization may be hosting.
If you have any questions or would like to speak with me discuss event ideas, I'd be glad to share some of our section's experience. As you may know, the Tampa Bay ACS has been celebrating NCW every year since 2012, and we hope to keep the spirit strong again this year!
Join us in making the 2018 celebration of NCW a success for the Tampa Bay community.

Retired Chemists Group Luncheon
Thanks to those who attended the first ACS Retired Luncheon on May 8, 2014. It was good to get together and have each of us introduce ourselves. There were more than a few "connections" found out that day.
We more or less decided on four luncheons per year. Several ideas for a location were tours of Port Manatee, Mote Aquarium, Moffitt Research Center, museum restoration tour, and a micro-brewery tour. If these tours do not have food on site, several golf country club were mentioned as a nice place to have lunch.
We plan to take the summer off and meet again in the fall as in Sept or Oct.

Title: "Quinoxalinol Imines as Soft-Donor Ligands for Use in Sensors and Catalysis"
Abstract: An increase in the use of nuclear fuels for electrical power production is one proposal to limit global dependence on fossil fuels; however, the environmental and health concerns that surround the use of actinides limits the acceptance of nuclear power by the public. New ligands are required that can coordinate, sense, and purify actinides for rapid detection or decontamination applications. During our effort to develop colorimetric or fluorescent sensors for actinides, we have developed ligands incorporating quinoxalines or imine aza-donors and characterized their ability to distinguish between different metals. Complexes with early transition metals were prepared for comparison to the actinides, and these were found to also be useful in ligand supported catalysis. Here, we present a summary of our results in both the development of sensors for uranyl and catalysis with copper.
