Announcements
ACS Leadership Institute
Taking place in Atlanta, Georgia this upcoming year, the 2024 ACS Leadership Institute aims to teach its invitees principles of management and necessary leadership skills to further improve their success as leaders in ACS. Our very own Tampa Bay chapter Chair, Tony Pham, will be in attendance to attend a variety of workshops and sessions! This is an amazing opportunity to network with other chapter and national ACS leaders and gain valuable knowledge.
USF Undergraduate Teaching Award
This past November, the Provost's Office of the University of South Florida announced that Kim Fields and Christie Tang were selected for the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for this 2022-23 year! This is an amazing accomplishment that recognizes excellent teaching in the USF community. The award description is as follows:
" The goal of the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award program is to encourage excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. The University intends to ensure that the foundation courses of the undergraduate curriculum receive the proper emphasis in preparing students for work in the major, as well as providing the proper foundation in critical thinking, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills. "
Join us in congratulating Kim Fields and Christie Tang for all of their accomplishments and hard work they put towards the USF community! Furthermore, thank you for all the work you do for our ACS Tampa Bay chapter as members of the executive committee!
Great American Teach-In
Kimberly Fields and Crystal Saut participated in this year's Great American Teach-In! This is an opportunity for local K-12 students to learn more about a variety of careers by asking questions, participating in activities, and presentations. Kimberly Fields went to a Countryside High School in Pinellas County and spoke about chemistry and shared with students what they could do as a chemist and career possibilities. Crystal Saut went to a local elementary school to showcase an experiment to third grade classrooms using this year's 2023 NCW theme of "The Healing Powered of Chemistry" and the students enjoyed their hands on experiment! This is an amazing experience for all those involved where those going into the classroom, like Kimberly Fields and Crystal Saut, can share their enthusiasm for chemistry and the students gain insight and knowledge. Definitely a great opportunity, sparking a joy in chemistry for future chemists!
Younger Chemists Committee, YCC
Our member Jhon Figueroa conducted mini lectures at both Kiran C. Patel High School and King High School with lunch sponsored by our ACS Younger Chemists Committee (YCC). Furthermore, YCC sponsored lunch and college day experience in USF for King High School students on December 2nd, 2023. The students received basic lab safety training and performed four different mini-experiment: water hardness analysis, extraction of beta-carotene with TLC analysis, identification of unknown compound using Gas Chromatography, and color dye concentration determination using UV-vis spectrophotometer. The experiments were led by USF teaching laboratory staff. During the sponsored lunch, USF STEM advisors and the Chemistry department chair, Dr. James Leahy, were all invited to give introduction talks and participated in Q&A sessions answering any questions students may have. An amazing opportunity for these future chemists!
Publication Highlight
We would like to showcase a new publication "Cu-ATC vs. Cu-BTC: comparing the H2 adsorption mechanism through experiment, molecular simulation, and inelastic neutron scattering studies." Notable co-authors of this publication include our Tampa Bay chapter Chair Tony Pham, past USF Chemistry Ph.D. graduates Katherine Forrest, Zheng Niu, and Brant Tudor, past USF undergraduate Chloe Starkey, and former USF Chemistry professors Mohamed Eddaoudi, Shengqian Ma, and Brian Space.
